Scripture Reading:  Colossians 1:3-14

The Domain of Darkness

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.—Colossians 1:13-14

When I was little, my dad used to play hide and go seek with my sister and I.  He liked to find a dark corner of the house and hide, jumping out to scare us as we got closer to finding him.  Of course, little kids already have a hard time with the dark, so this didn’t make it easier on me. I’ve mostly gotten over my fear of the dark now ????, but there’s still something about the darkness that is unsettling.  Maybe it’s the lack of vision, or the unknown of “what’s out there.” Either way, Scripture uses darkness to describe the realm of Satan and where he works.  It’s also the realm where we used to live before we decided to follow Christ. And yet, we continually struggle to completely leave the darkness. In an odd way, we like it.  We like the fact that we can indulge ourselves in our old habits, or revert back to our former way of doing things. It’s comfortable. But, it’s not the way it’s supposed to be.  How about your life? Is it in the darkness? Or, has it been redeemed by Christ? Have you left the darkness? Or, is there still something left in your life that you go back to in the dark?  God came to deliver us from the darkness, and to transfer us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, Jesus Christ.
