"Death To Life" - 19m:16s
Series: Because of Jesus...3 Lives ChangedScripture Reading: Mark 15:6-16
And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcised of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
—Colossians 2:13-14
Have you ever had a near death experience? I can't say it was a near death experience, but I thought I was going to drown once. My grandmother and I were swimming in the ocean while on vacation with our family, and a strong rip current took us out farther than we realized. Before we knew it, we couldn't touch bottom, and the current kept pulling us out. Neither of us was strong enough to fight it or had the sense to swim with the current to shore, so we panicked. Fortunately, someone saw our arms waving frantically and ran for a lifeguard. I'll never forget coming to shore and standing there shaking.
Near death experiences, or any event that brings us face to face with the brevity of life, change us. They help us understand that life is short, and that at any moment we could be facing eternity. Fortunately for us, we know there was one who already faced death for us. He faced death to give us life, and this morning we celebrate his resurrection in all of its glory and the privilege of eternal life it offers us. Have you decided to take this free gift of eternal life he offers? Have you made the decision to be buried with him in baptism, rising again to new life? If you haven't, I couldn't think of a better day to take the final step in becoming a follower of Jesus. If you have already made that decision, Happy Easter! We have been brought from death to life!
