Longing for the Word
I open my mouth and pant, because I long for your commandments
—Psalm 119:131
I’ve been reading through Psalm 119 recently in my daily time with God. It’s the longest chapter in the Bible and, while I have read this chapter numerous times, I was struck this last time with how many times David praises God for His word and His commandments. He speaks of God’s word as a “lamp to his feet” (v. 105) and his commandments as being “above fine gold” (v. 127) because “by them you have given me life” (v. 93). The descriptions and praises for the Word of God are endless.
I began to wonder, how much effort do I put into learning and living the Word of God? How much do you? If I’m honest, most of my day is spent trying to figure out the solutions to my own problems, offering excuses for the way I respond just like the world does to life situations, and generally living on my own—without God’s commandments and His word. It seems like this is a constant struggle for me, even as I engage in daily conversations with God through prayer and His word.
Let me ask you another question: What are you doing to learn and live the Word of God? Are you taking advantage of what you do have—a Bible at home, in your car, or on your phone; a church that proclaims the message of Christ multiple times a week; podcasts you can listen to on your way to work; opportunities to engage with other believers in conversation about God?
What are you doing to make this better?
We offer multiple Bible classes throughout the week here on Sunday and Wednesday nights for all ages. If you’re not currently in one, why not? It’s free! ???? There are probably multiple Bibles in your possession and in various places around your house or car. If you don’t regularly read it outside of church, why not? It’s also free! (Well, kinda, although you did probably pay for the Bible). Radio stations and podcasts are always broadcasting sermons and lessons on God’s word. If you don’t listen to any, why not? It’s (that’s right, you guessed it) FREE! Nowhere in history has the Word of God been so accessible to so many people.
There’s a reason why David wrote almost an entire chapter about the worth of the Word of God. It’s valuable. It’s life-giving. It’s life-changing. It’s the message of love from a Creator to His Creation, and He wants you to know Him through it. What could be better than that?
