Series: All In: A Journey Through Acts

Scripture Reading:  Acts 2:42-47

ALL IN

Today we begin our new sermon series entitled, “ALL IN.”  We’ll be looking at the first 8 chapters of Acts and seeing how the early church went all in with their devotion to following Jesus.  To introduce the series, I thought it appropriate to share the lyrics to a song by a popular Christian artist, Matthew West. The song is titled “All In.”

My feet are frozen on this middle ground

The water's warm here but the fire's gone out

I played it safe for so long the passion left

Turns out safe is just another word for regret

So, I step to the edge and I take a deep breath

We're all dying to live but we're all scared to death

And this is the part where my head tells my heart

You should turn back around but there's no turning back now

[Chorus]

I'm going all in

Headfirst into the deep end

I hear You calling

And this time the fear won't win

I'm going, I'm going all in…

In the background of the writing of this song, Matt talks about being a “professional Christian” as a musician and how that at times that has made him scared of being more bold and more active in his faith.  It’s easy to live as a Christian publicly, but when it comes down to truly being sold out and living what you say, Matt admits to struggling.

Are you “all in?”  Or, does your life look more like a professional Christian—you know what to do and what to say, but if someone peeled back the layers, there’s hypocrisy or apathy?  Let’s look at the early church together and see what really drove them and how they went ALL IN.
