You're Making It Worse
Scripture Reading: Colossians 2:16-23
Denying Self
I found this cartoon funny and timely for a number of reasons. #1, we are in the middle of the Lent season which, while typically we don’t observe in the Churches of Christ, has to do with fasting or “giving up” something. Also, it coincides with our sermon this morning. While not limited to fasting, our time together this morning will be talking about self-denial (not being in denial, but denying the body something). As Christians, we are used to denying self. Jesus will say if we want to follow Him, we need to deny ourselves and take up our cross (Matt. 16:24). There are lots of ways to deny ourselves, fasting being one of them. But there is a point at which our self-denial can be misdirected. We can deny ourselves things that aren’t necessary to deny. We can deny ourselves something in an effort to attain greater standing with God. We can even deny ourselves, thinking that this will ensure our salvation. What does God say about it? Let’s look together at the next section Paul writes in the book of Colossians, in a lesson entitled, “You’re Making it Worse.”
