Children and the Heart of God
Scripture Reading: James 1:22-27
Children and the Heart of God
Charles Francis Adams, 19th century political figure and diplomat, kept a diary. One day he entered: "Went fishing with my son today--a day wasted." His son, Brook Adams, also kept a diary, which is still in existence. On that same day, Brook Adams made this entry: "Went fishing with my father--the most wonderful day of my life!"* What we see as trivial and sometimes boring and mundane, our children often see as wonderful and fascinating. It is so tempting for us to dismiss our children’s wishes for our time as one more thing on our plate or one more box to be checked. A child’s wellbeing depends upon an adult’s investment in them.
Looking at Scripture, it does not take long to see God’s concern for children and their welfare. Throughout his word, God is adamantly concerned with the care of children, particularly children who are at risk. This morning is our Day of Prayer and Giving for Children. The Woodsfield Church of Christ supports several important ministries dealing with children: Orphan’s Lifeline International, Potter’s Children’s Home, Midwestern Children’s Home, and New Pathways. Each of these are valuable resources for at risk children. Although we support these ministries regularly as a body, we will spend some time this morning taking up a special collection to be divided among all of them, as well as looking at God’s heart for children in His word.
