All in the Family
When I was a kid, my dad loved an old Saturday Night Live clip entitled “Dysfunctional Family Christmas.” It was made to look like a commercial for a Christmas album entitled “Dysfunctional Family Christmas,” and all the made-up songs in the sketch were about family tension around the holidays. The songs were funny, but sadly all too often true for many families.
Why are family relationships so hard? It’s ironic that those we share the most DNA with and those we spend the most time growing up with are sometimes the most difficult to get along with. Many understand the hurt and difficulty of a tense family relationship, or the memory of a holiday that didn’t end well because of an argument.
Jesus, unfortunately, knew this tension also. The rift in his family was largely based on their misunderstanding of his mission as the Messiah, but as we’ll see this morning the divide was very real for him. But, Jesus offers hope. What is the hope when our family relationships are not what we wanted them to be? Let’s find some answers to this question and others as we take a dive into the ending of Mark 3 this morning. Welcome to worship!
