A Deeper Love

This morning is a rare event—Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday! Valentine’s Day is a day we traditionally think about romantic relationships and our love for each other as human beings. Marriage between a man and a woman was designed to be the highest expression of intimacy and connection as human beings. I find it really interesting that marriage is instituted before the Fall in Genesis. God has relationship with His creation, but He also wants His creation—human beings—to enjoy connection together. This is why we see God creating another human being, a partner, for Adam.
As deeply as we love our spouses, there is a love that goes even deeper than marriage. God’s love for us surpasses any human relationship and is fully demonstrated in the giving of His Son, Jesus. When my dad was sick, my Mom said something on the phone I’ll never forget. “You know, Scott, as much as I love your father, God loves him more.” That simple thought gave my mother comfort—that even though she could not be there physically with him to love him, there was One who was always present that loved my dad even more than she ever could.
Do you know this deeper love? Maybe you’ve never made the decision to follow Christ. You need to know that no matter if you ever decide to follow Him or not, He will always love you more deeply than any human being ever will. Maybe you’ve been a Christian most of your life, but you struggle to feel the love of God. Guilt, regret, doubts, or a difficult past haunt you and it’s hard for you to imagine there is Someone who loves you so. He does. He loves you still, despite your flaws and mistakes.
For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
